Ruben Östlund’s new satirical film Triangle of Disappointment dominated the European Film Awards by winning 4 awards, including the biggest award of the night, the award for best film.

Östlund also won the Best Screenplay and Best Director awards for his work on the film, while Zlatko Burić won the Best Actor award for his lead role.

The film, which won this year’s Palme d’Or, follows Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean), a celebrity couple who are invited on a luxury cruise for the super-rich, led by a captain of ship deranged (Woody Harrelson). What seemed to be an Instagrammable experience turns into a catastrophe, leaving the survivors stranded on a deserted island and struggling to survive.

Vicky Krieps won the Best Actress award for her role in the well-received drama Corsage, while The Good Boss, starring Javier Bardem, won the award for Best Comedy in several major awards.

The awards ceremony, organized by the European Film Academy, took place in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavík. Nominations in the main categories, including Best European Film, Director, Actor and Actress, are voted on by the Academy’s 4,400 members in a three-stage process.

The event was preceded this year by the first edition of the Academy’s Month of European Film.

As previously announced, German director Margarethe von Trotta was honored with the European Lifetime Luck Lifetime Achievement Award, while Palestinian director Elia Suleiman was honored with the European Luck in World Cinema Award.

Italian director March Bellocchio received the award for Best Innovative European Storytelling for his miniseries Exterior Night time.

The European Film Academy’s Excellence Awards, celebrating achievements in the arts and crafts categories, were presented on 23 November. Winners include Edward Berger’s All Quiet On The Western Front, which won the award for Best European Make-up and Hairstyling for Heike Merker, and the award for Best European Special Effects was awarded to Frank Petzold, Viktor Müller and Markus Frank.
